Elizabeth (Beth)
Campbell is a
3rd grade teacher at
Glenvar Elementary
School in Roanoke
County. Her
classroom is a place
of song, dance, and
bright colors, all
of which combine to
create an atmosphere
where students feel
comfortable and open
to new ways of
learning. Her
principal, Danny
Guard, says that
Beth is a tremendous
planner who finds
creative ways to
reach her children
and cites her
ability to reach
children of all
abilities.
Beth plans to
explore the great
wonders of the
world, possibly
including the
pyramids of Egypt,
the Great Wall of
China and others in
order to gather
information to share
with her students.
Carol Fox of
Blacksburg Middle
School came to
teaching after
raising her children
and realizing that
she, in her own
words, "really loves
social studies." She
is a strong believer
in the fact that
students are fully
capable of sharing
responsibility for
their learning, and
uses a combination
of classroom
projects, student
debates, and
interdisciplinary
learning in her
English and Social
Studies classes. Her
principal Gary McCoy
admires the way that
Carol expects the
best and gets it
from her students.
Carol plans to
travel to Vietnam to
explore the myth and
reality of the place
where her father
served as a
helicopter pilot in
the war when Carol
was the same age as
the students she
teaches.
