  • LOCAL PROJECT SUMMARY

    2008-2009 VIRGINIA'S TEACHER TRAINING
    INSTITUTE

THE TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTE (formerly NTTI) is committed to putting the power of technology into the hands of enthusiastic and well-prepared educators. By partnering teachers and technology, TTI seeks to serve as a catalyst for lasting change and reform. Thirteen/WNET, public television's flagship station in New York, created the NTTI to help educators creatively and effectively use public television's wealth of instructional programming and telecommunications resources. Virginia continues to use the basic NTTI format to conduct professional development for teachers in the area of integration of technology into SOL- based lessons, but it now has a more Virginia-specific emphasis as the Institutes have evolved into the present TTI. By strengthening teachers' skills, the Institute enables educators to put these tools to work, to design innovative lessons and methods, and to mentor and train colleagues back in their schools.

    2008-2009 TTI

Blue Ridge PBS, as well as other Virginia public television stations, combine a talented corps of Master Teachers and teacher participants to tackle critical thinking and problem-solving exercises. Teachers learn to direct student attention before viewing video materials; to select appropriate sequences for focus; and to pause the video to elaborate on ideas, promote analysis and discourse, and elicit student responses.

The Institute in Virginia follows a series of training events.

    • Master Teachers attend a training camp to learn about the latest emerging educational technologies and to brainstorm about ideas for lesson development.
    • Outstanding teachers are selected from the 41 school divisions served by BRPTV to attend an Institute to participate in workshop sessions. Participants work intensively with grade level Master Teacher teams and with instructional video resources. Master teachers demonstrate their lessons and help guide teacher participants through the development of their own technology-based lessons.
    • Participants receive hands-on training in telecommunications and a choice of other technologies such as SmartBoards, Inspiration/Kidspiration, Advanced PowerPoint, Digital Cameras, Web-Quests, Assistive Technology, Producer/MovieMaker, Digital Microscopes, School Touch Pads, Advanced Use of Excel, Flex Cams, Educational Uses of Palm Pilots, and other emerging technologies that the Consortia may choose.

Each participant, in addition to direct training, receives TTI lessons, technology practice time, and additional classroom materials.

    DOE ENDORSES TTI

The Virginia Department of Education staff has been an integral part of the planning and implementation process for TTI in Virginia and has provided written endorsements. Institutes include specific technology training classes that address Internet applications, productivity, and items included in the training standards.

    TTI MASTER TEACHERS

    Who are Master Teachers?

Virginia's TTI Master Teachers are chosen by the regional ITV stations from among the most talented kindergarten through grade 12 teachers in their areas. Most Master Teacher applicants will have attended an Institute before beginning the application process. Applicants are notified of their acceptance and attend a regional training camp to begin developing their lessons for presentation and publication. Follow-up training meetings and rehearsals with a teammate insure a polished performance at subsequent Institute(s). Master Teachers are paid for their published lessons and for presenting them to the public.

Essential skills for a successful Master Teacher are:

    • Creativity in development of a lesson following the TTI model
    • Polished writing that can clearly communicate the lesson, step by step
    • Excellent presentation skills for demonstrating classroom-tested TTI lessons and methodologies

The following teachers had completed their Master Teacher Training Program as of publication time for the Blue Ridge PBS viewing area. This area encompasses 40 school divisions and over 14,000 square miles. These Master Teachers are willing to share their expertise through presentations at local, regional, state, and national events.
